First Javanese batiks were brought to Poland at the beginning of XX century. Polish artist fascinated with those works of arts attempted to work in this technique and combine Javanese inspirations with local folk pattern-designing.
Batik Workshop in Slupsk was founded in 1989 and it is a unique project . It was established by Maria Hasiec, who had been interested in batik and other Indonesian works of art from the collection of Museum of Asia and Pacific in Warsaw for many years.
For several years over 100 young people have been learing batik technique there fut also have been getting to know the variety of Indonesian culture. It has always been the most important source of inspiration. Traditional ornaments, dance, wayang theatre, masks, old-time architecture, landscapes of rice fields, tropical flowers, birds and butterflies have always been present in creative activity of your artists from Slupsk.
